Holistic Health

Taking a holistic approach to wellness goes beyond eating vegetables and going to the gym.  Health is not merely the absence of disease.  It embodies much more than that.  It’s a beautiful harmony between mind, body, and soul.  “If there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot harm you.”-African Proverb.  Mental, emotional, and spiritual health each play a major role in the state of our physical health.  They all are equally important, and need to be nurtured.

Complex Biochemical Masterpiece

Our body is made up of different systems that work synergistically together in a miraculous way.  If these systems are in balance, then the body is strong, and vibrant.  Our pupils automatically dilate when there is non-sufficient light.  Our body temperature regulates itself to stay within safe limits.  We sweat to cool off, and shiver which helps our bodies warm up.  A thriving body can heal itself.  But when we begin to feel sluggish, restless, or achy, this can be an indication that something in your body needs attention.  Symptoms such as digestive problems, or migraines can pop up mysteriously.  Our bodies are telling us something is out of balance.  Something needs attention.

Finding Balance

According to homeopathic teachings, each of us have three main levels: physical, emotional and mental.  These areas are separate and distinct with specific functions, characteristics and qualities, yet they are also integrated and interact in a unified way.  Symptoms can occur in all or any one of these areas.  Physical symptoms are very familiar to us.  It’s hard to ignore headaches, joint pain, stomach upset, swelling and inflammation.  Symptoms or disturbances in the emotional and mental functions, and their contribution to disease and imbalance are generally less familiar.  In biological terms, our bodies are maintained by a process known as homeostasis, which is the balance, harmony, stability and equilibrium of the whole person.*

Primary Foods

There are many different factors that contribute to the overall health of an individual, and they are not found on your plate.  These factors include things like a spiritual practice, a satisfying career, healthy relationships, joy, creativity, physical activity, and more.  If there is a significant lack in any of these areas, it can cause damage to your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.  Consider how an unhealthy relationship can cause stress or anxiety.  Working in a career where you are miserable makes it impossible to want to get out of bed in the morning, robbing you of joy and fulfillment.  Without a good support structure, tragedy can turn into depression.  These Primary Foods are the areas of your life that enable you to thrive, or if lacking, can tear down your health.  My tray of Primary Foods will look different from yours.  What does your tray look like?  What Primary Foods are abundant?  Which ones are missing?

How Healthy Are You?

Are you being nourished by Primary Foods? Ask yourself the following questions:

 

Do I have at least three friends that I enjoy, and that I can count on?

Am I happy and fulfilled at work?

Am I in a loving, safe relationship?

Do I regularly find time to do the things I enjoy?

Am I getting 150 hours per week of moderate exercise?

Do I have a creative outlet in which to express myself?

What are my spiritual beliefs, and how do they affect my life?

Do I understand my purpose in life?

 

Load Up

We can eat all the broccoli on the farm, but if we are suffering from loneliness or depression, or feeling stuck in a miserable job, we will never achieve health.  I encourage you to nourish yourselves with Primary Foods, in addition to your healthy edible ones.  Take long walks in nature.  Make time for loved ones.  Take an art class.  Whatever this looks like for you, don’t be afraid to step out, speak up, and try new things.  These Primary Foods offer wholeness, vitality, longevity, and are essential for quality of life.  Your future self will thank you.
